Wonton Soup Recipe

Ingredients

For the Wontons:

  • 1 pound ground pork (or chicken/shrimp)
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, minced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Wonton wrappers (about 30-40)

For the Soup:

  • 6 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce (adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil (adjust to taste)
  • 2 cups bok choy or spinach (optional, for greens)
  • 2-3 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
  • Fresh cilantro (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Wonton Filling
  1. Mix Filling:
    • In a large bowl, combine the ground pork, chopped green onions, minced garlic, minced ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil, cornstarch, salt, and pepper. Mix well until combined.

Step 2: Assemble the Wontons
  1. Fill Wontons:
    • Take a wonton wrapper and place a small spoonful (about 1 teaspoon) of the filling in the center.
  2. Fold Wontons:
    • Wet the edges of the wrapper with water. Fold the wrapper in half diagonally to form a triangle, pressing out any air. Seal the edges firmly. You can also bring the two corners together to form a “bowl” shape if desired.
  3. Repeat:
    • Continue filling and sealing the wontons until all the filling is used.

Step 3: Make the Soup
  1. Prepare Broth:
    • In a large pot, combine the chicken or vegetable broth and water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
  2. Add Wontons:
    • Gently drop the wontons into the boiling broth. Cook for about 5-7 minutes or until the wontons float to the top and are cooked through.
  3. Add Greens:
    • If using, add the bok choy or spinach to the pot during the last 2 minutes of cooking.

Step 4: Season and Serve
  1. Season:
    • Stir in the soy sauce and sesame oil, adjusting to taste.
  2. Garnish:
    • Ladle the soup into bowls, garnishing with sliced green onions and fresh cilantro, if desired.
  3. Serve:
    • Enjoy your homemade wonton soup hot!

Tips:

  • Make-Ahead: You can prepare wontons ahead of time and freeze them. To cook from frozen, add a few extra minutes to the cooking time in the broth.
  • Broth Variations: For added flavor, you can use homemade broth or add ingredients like star anise or ginger to the broth while it simmers.
  • Dipping Sauce: Serve with a side of soy sauce or a vinegar-based dipping sauce for extra flavor.

Enjoy your delicious Wonton Soup!
