Fried Cabbage Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 medium head of green cabbage, chopped
  • 1 large onion, sliced (yellow or white)
  • 2-3 tablespoons olive oil or butter
  • 3-4 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika or red pepper flakes (optional, for a bit of heat)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (optional, for added flavor)
  • Optional: 1-2 carrots, shredded or sliced (for color and sweetness)
  • Optional: 4-6 slices of bacon, chopped (for added flavor)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients
  1. Chop the Cabbage:
    • Remove the outer leaves of the cabbage, then cut it into quarters, remove the core, and slice it into thin strips.
  2. Slice the Onion:
    • Slice the onion thinly. If using, chop the bacon and set it aside.

Step 2: Cook the Bacon (Optional)
  1. Cook the Bacon:
    • In a large skillet over medium heat, add the chopped bacon. Cook until crispy, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the bacon and set it aside, leaving the rendered fat in the pan.

Step 3: Sauté the Vegetables
  1. Heat Oil or Butter:
    • If not using bacon, heat the olive oil or butter in the same skillet over medium heat.
  2. Cook the Onions:
    • Add the sliced onions to the skillet and sauté for about 5 minutes, or until they are translucent and starting to caramelize.
  3. Add Garlic (Optional):
    • If using, add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute until fragrant.
  4. Add Cabbage:
    • Gradually add the chopped cabbage to the skillet, stirring well to combine with the onions. If using, add the shredded carrots at this stage.

Step 4: Cook the Cabbage
  1. Sauté:
    • Cook the cabbage, stirring occasionally, for about 10-15 minutes, or until it is wilted and tender. If desired, cover the skillet for a few minutes to help the cabbage cook down more quickly.
  2. Season:
    • Season with salt, pepper, and smoked paprika or red pepper flakes, if using. If you like a bit of tang, add the apple cider vinegar at this stage.

Step 5: Combine and Serve
  1. Add Bacon (Optional):
    • If you cooked bacon, stir it back into the skillet with the cabbage just before serving.
  2. Serve:
    • Remove from heat and serve hot as a side dish or over rice or pasta as a main dish.

Tips:

  • Variations: You can add other vegetables like bell peppers or mushrooms for extra flavor and nutrition.
  • Serving Suggestions: Fried cabbage pairs well with grilled meats, sausages, or as part of a hearty breakfast with eggs.
  • Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a skillet or microwave.
